The FCX U17 Girls Black traveled to the CASL North Carolina College Showcase December 3rd-6th.
Coach
Stuart Peek said, "The tournament is an extremely tough tournament to be
accepted into, and for the second year, the team played in the Premier
level, in this level most of the players on teams are being recruited by
Division One Colleges."
In the first game against WHYFC from
Carolina, the team came out extremely strong. The first half was an even
affair, with FCX being 1-0 up at half time off a Kayla Schutter goal.
The second half, FCX came out even stronger, and scored 6 unanswered
goals, including a hatrick from Jill Steinbrink, and two from Maesyn
Poidomani, as well as Schutter scoring her second. Coach Peek said, "Sometimes you have games where every play is a goal, this game was that
game, it was an even contest for most of the game, the scoreline
obviously does not reflect that, but we scored some world class goals
today."
In the second game, the team faced Ohio
Classic Eagles, who just won their State Cup and are an MRL Premier 1
team. The game started even, with both teams creating chances. FCX had
two close attempts before Eagles capitalized on two defensive errors
and went in to halftime with a 2-0 lead. FCX continued to press, and unlike the day
before, created lots of chances, but could not get the ball in the net,
14 corners in the second half alone. Eagles scored another goal off of a
missed clearance and FCX did get one eventually, but the final score ended
4-1. Coach Peek said, "We did not deserve to win, although we created
more chances, the other team out willed us, and even though they created
half as many chances as we did, they capitalized on them."
The
third game was against Texas Spirit FC. The FCX team was determined to
close out with a win. Coach Peek said, "One of this teams strengths is
their will to achieve. They always as individuals and as a team look to
do more, push more, and get outside their comfort zones to achieve."
The
game started with FCX dominating in the physical play, the speed of
play, and the style of play. FCX created a handful of chances and unlike
the game against the Eagles, scored back to back goals from corners.
Kayla Keck scored two world class headers, unstoppable. Coach Peek said, "Kaylas timing, strength and ability to finish with power, makes her
hard to deal with from any set piece." FCX did not settle for the two
goals, and Anna Brodjian scored a rebound goal, from great approach play
from Jill Steinbrink. At half time, the team was focused, and they were
ready straight off of the kick off, Anna Brodjian
adding her second of the game, with a great placed one touch shot from a
Sophia Spinell cross. Brodjian then completed her hatrick, beating 3
defenders off the dribble and hitting an unstoppable shot form 16 yards
out. Maesyn Poidomani scored the sixth, with an excellent individual
run, and a rocket shot from 18 yards out, Texas pulled one back towards
end of game, FCX winning 6-1.
Coach Peek said, "Apart from the
15 minutes of bad play against Eagles that cost us that game, the girls
had a first class weekend. The best thing about this team is the level
they self impose on themselves, they strive for better, they push
each-other, and they play hard all the time. Their first reaction after
the last game, was not to celebrate, but to set their targets for the
upcoming Disney Showcase they will be attending. They are a tough team,
and I am extremely proud of their progression over the last 2 seasons."
